We recommend that you have yourself professionally measured by either a wedding consultant or a professional seamstress. If this is not a possibility then have a friend or family member measure you, as trying to measure yourself will distort your results.
- Tie a string around your waist to find out where your true waist is. So many pants are made lower on the hips these days. Your waist size is measured where your string is sitting. Be sure not to suck in your tummy and leave one finger under the tape so that you will be able to breathe in your gown!
- Measure your bust around the widest part of your back and the fullest part of your bust. Be sure to wear the bra or undergarment that you intend to wear with your dress. You should be aware that your bra size is not an accurate measurement of your bust.
- Measure your hips around the fullest part of your hips. The way to determine where this is exactly is to place your palms on your true waist (where you tied your string) and let your fingers hang down. The tips of your fingers should be about where the fullest part of your hips is.
- Measure the length of your body from the hollow of your neck to the length that you would like the hem of the dress to fall. Make sure to wear the shoes and the undergarments that you intend to wear with the gown, including any kind of crinoline. The hollow of your neck can be located by feeling the circular dent at the center of your collarbone.
* If one of your maids is pregnant, the best thing to do is estimate what her measurements might be at the time of the wedding. Be sure to purchase extra fabric and have a seamstress add panels to the dress, to enlarge the stomach area, as close as possible to the actual wedding. |
